SAUGATUCK WILL ERECT

MONUMENT FOR NOTED DOCTOR

MAY 8, 1944- Plans have been completed by the citizens of Saugatuck, for the erection of a memorial in honor of the late Doctor Robert J. Walker, who has given outstanding service to the community. Carl Hoerman, local architect, has submitted the design for this monument.

The memorial will be erected in the southeast section of Butler Park, in the vicinity in which Doctor Walker spent a great part of his life, and will be erected by local workmen. It will consist of the drinking fountain which now stands in the corner of the park and which will be moved to form the local center of the memorial, with five concrete slabs reaching out to the sides forming a half circle. Bordering this half circle at its outer edge will be a concrete bench, with side pilasters and evergreen planting of sheared arbor vitae. The bench will have a top of cut stone. The five slabs represent the five decades of service to this community.

A fund, raised by the citizens of Saugatuck, for this project has been placed in the Fruit Growers State bank, and contributions are still being received.
