About the Society

The Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society was founded in 1986. The Society provides leadership in enabling the community-at-large to connect with and understand its past, to preserve the quality of community life, and to respect and use the area's history to shape its future. Society members have recognized that learning about their collective past is an excellent means of enriching their own lives in the present while at the same time making a wise long-term investment for the generations to come.

What We Do

The Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society has defined a number of areas of interest pursuant to its overall mission. Each Area is represented by a standing committee of the Society.

The Archives and Collections Committee's responsibilities focus on the accession and management of artifacts, photographs, and documents.

The Research and Documentation Committee is involved with researching and writing local history. This committee oversees the Building Survey, Oral History, and Heritage Documentation Projects.

The Development Committee is the fundraising arm of the Society, soliciting funds from private individuals, corporations, foundations, and other granting institutions.

The Membership Development Committee is in charge of membership records, the monthly Society newsletter, and programs for monthly meetings and special events.

The Publication and Graphics Committee publishes various materials and books on local history topics and oversees the visual identity of the Society and its Museum.

The Public Relations/Media Committee promotes our activities and speaks on our behalf to our constituency outside the Society.

The Museum Committee manages our most visible component, The Saugatuck-Douglas Museum. The Committee mounts yearly exhibitions, maintains the PumpHouse facility and grounds, operates the Museum Shop, and coordinates the volunteers.

The Heritage Preservation Committee is charged with seeing to all matters relating to preservation and includes sub-committes on Architecture and Design, Greenspace Preservation, and Tourism Impact.

The Education Committee disseminates local history information to the public-at-large and consists of sub-committees on Adult Education Outreach, Youth education, and Preservation awareness.

The Technology Committee advises on technology issues, produces images for exhibitions and publications, maintains a database of archival images, and oversees the Society's web presence.

The Oral History Committee has the responsibility for collecting and preserving an oral record of the area's history by conducting, editing, and archiving interviews with area citizens.
