Society Volunteers

Did you know that the Saugatuck Douglas Historical Society is almost entirely run by volunteers? Over 150 people volunteer for all facets of Society operations. This extensive volunteer involvement not only reflects the commitment of its members toward historic preservation of the area, but also reflects an awareness of the unique communities of Saugatuck and Douglas. Volunteers from many walks of life bring expertise, experience, and enthusiasm to the society and its programs; but with so many projects and opportunities available right now more volunteers are urgently needed. Here is just a sampling of volunteer opportunities available at the Saugatuck Douglas Historical Society.

Volunteer Opportunities

Archives - Working with the museums collections. We also have a Tech Center in the lower level of Dutcher Lodge (Douglas City Hall) at 86 Center Street, Douglas where we scan and copy our photographs and old newspaper collections - If you enjoy computer technology this is for you.

Greeters/Docents - Our museum is open noon to 4 pm daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day and on weekends in September and October. Greeters are needed to welcome visitors, answer questions and sell items in the gift shop. Training is provided. The Society also offers walking tours of downtown Saugatuck. If you are outgoing and enjoy meeting people from all over the world then you will enjoy volunteering here.

Exhibits - The Museum has received many awards for its annual highly popular exhibit reflecting area history topics. Are you a person with experience in graphic design, photography, writing and editing who would enjoy working on exhibits? Help is always needed in this category.

Hospitality - The Society holds their monthly membership meetings on the second Wednesday of the month. After the meeting, treats are served. Hostesses are needed each month.

Fundraising - If you have had experience, with fundraising for a non-profit organization we could sure use your expertise. We are in the process of acquiring our historic School House as a new home for the Society and we need lots of help in this area. The Society is also involved in several large annual fund-raisers, which are fun as well as educational. Look for more details about these on the web site.

Newsletter and Media - The Society puts out a monthly newsletter for its members and generates many news items for area publications. - Help is desperately needed in this area. Experience is nice but not necessary; however attention to deadlines is a must.
