Untitled c.1960s | Oil Creator: Cora Bliss Taylor Always interested in exploring new styles and methods, Cora Bliss Taylor sought out painter Vance Kirkland who was revolutionizing modern art in Denver, Colorado in the 1960s. Kirkland took the natural forms he saw in landscapes and made them more dynamic and highly stylized, coining the term “Designed Realism.” Called the “Father of Modern Colorado Painting,” Kirkland’s paintings have been described as “strange and otherworldly” as if we are looking into a nebula. One can see Kirkland’s influence in the above painting by Taylor. By playing with shapes and perspective, it appears as though Cora Bliss Taylor is trying to bend reality, with the objects all bursting outward from the center. The viewer is not expected to try to identify the subject matter, but instead, can enjoy the dynamic movement, balance, and color expressed in the painting.
