Uintah Knight Shippen 1872 – 1950 The Old Harbor, Saugatuck undated | oil on canvas Notes: Uintah Knight Shippen came from an old Eastern Shore of Maryland family, the Knights, who came to this country from Yorkshire, England. The daughter of the Rev. Lloyd Knight, she was born in Holidaysburg, near Altoona, Pennsylvania, and was the last of 13 children. She attended Knox College, class of 1892, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Uintah married Joseph F. Shippen, a general manager of the Northwestern Terra Cotta company of Chicago, in 1898 and the couple settled in the Evanston, Illinois area. Her husband was also interested in art and they were known to have toured Italy and England sketching. She also painted regularly with the Saugatuck, Michigan summer art colony at Ox-Bow.* This watercolor and text was a greeting sent to a family member in California. *adapted from Ed Bentley, Art Researcher Collection: Saugatuck Douglas History Center Gift of: Penne Laingen Accession: 2009.53.02
